Replace Your Thermostat with a Programmable Model [Video Demonstration]

Does your home's heating and cooling only go up, down, or off? Installing a programmable thermostat can save you a lot of cash and frustration. Microsoft's Hohm team shows you how easy it is in a how-to video.

Hohm is Microsoft's energy-conscious how-to and report-generating site, which we've previously covered and found pretty useful for pointing you in directions for future energy savings. Programmable thermostats, too, have some geek-friendly controls and options these days, and are well worth the hassle. Microsoft's how-to video shows you what to watch for when you're replacing a simple thermostat with a fully programmable model. The best advice in the clip? Secure the wires before you pull the old thermostat away—you do not want to have to fish around for them, or run new leads.

With spring just around the corner, you might now be able to turn off the heat for the time required to install, and if you've got a dual heating/cooling system, you'll get ahead on air conditioning costs.

Done your own thermostat upgrade? Tell us any tips you picked up, and brag righteously about the savings, in the comments.
