Color us unsurprised, but it's still notable to hear that Adobe is stopping investment in its software's capability to port content over to iPhone OS. The company's great hope on this front, Packager for iPhone, will still ship as part of Flash CS5 as planned, but beyond that Adobe is essentially giving up on Apple's mobile OS until further notice. In spite of being repeatedly rebuffed by Jobs and company before, the Flash maker had kept up hope that it could sway (or nag) Apple into validating its wares, but the final straw in this relationship seems to have been Apple's dev tool lockdown. So what will Adobe do now? Principal Product Manager Mike Chambers tells us that Android is doing kind of okay and his company will shift its attentions to it and other mobile platforms. Rumors are circulating that Sony is set to get into the micro four thirds camera market with a new alpha offering that will bring some interesting features to the category. One of the most interesting rumors is that the Sony cameras will have some sort of new snap on lens mounting system. Anyone who has changed a lens on an existing camera knows the twisting involved to do so.

Rumors are also claiming that all of the Sony micro four thirds lenses will be made using Chromium. This is supposed to give the lenses excellent image quality and make them cheap as well. I can�t see the Sony name being associated with anything cheap personally. So far there lenses have been rumored including a 16mm f/2.8 unit, an 18-55mm F3.5-5.6, and an 18-200mm zoom lens. The launch date for the camera and lenses is pegged as May 11.

NeoView KOLON T-OLED Display Makes a Great Heads-Up Display

We’ve seen our share of heads-up displays (HUDs) in the past, but they just didn’t seem to fit the bill. After all, flashing LEDs and reflective plastic don’t make for the perfect accessory to put on your windshield. Thankfully though, we’re always one step closer to blurring the line between science fact and fiction, and NeoView KOLON is taking us one step closer with their recently showcased T-OLED screen.

NeoView KOLON was on scene at FilmTech recently, and they brought along with them one of their T-OLED (Transparent OLED) screens, to showcase what the tech can do. And, as you can see from the image, they’ve got a nice little display going for what it might look like if they put it in your car. And, unlike GPS trying to track your ever-changing location, this would simply wire into your vehicle.

This was simply a test to show off the technology, so there’s no way to say when, or even if, this could be used in an actual vehicle. The only thing we’re wondering, is if we’d have to have that display case somewhere on the dash, or if we could have a part of the T-OLED actually put in, or on, our windshield. Hey, we can dream, right?

GPNC Korea announces the first me-too Android HDTV

Anyone opposed to another Android packing TV announced by a foreign manufacturer of questionable validity? We figured you weren't, so say hello to GPNC Korea's television running Android 1.5 on a 833 Mhz ARM Cortex A8 chip. While it's claiming NTSC and ATSC support among other broadcast standards, the USA doesn't appear to have made the cut for availability, with 10 different countries including Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Poland, Australia and Dubai. Practically identical to People of Lava's effort, it is slated for 42-, 47- and 55-inch LED-backlit versions with no real price or date, and even this promo pic looks very familiar. GPNC managed to keep the screen clear of error messages this time, but its website is flagged by Google as "dangerous" so we'd probably wait for something more official before making any attempts to preorder. At this rate, these TVs will be as ubiquitous as Android/ARM tablets before long -- let's hope Sony and Intel spill the details on those Google TV plans sooner rather than later.

PhoneGap framework fine for App Store development, sez Apple

Now, we've all been concerned about recent updates to the iPhone dev agreement -- you haven't been sleeping and your parents are, quite frankly, worried for your sanity. And it's a heady subject: "what is the fate of PhoneGap in the wake of the iPhone OS 4 beta SDK?" Well, worry no more, little one -- it seems that Jesse Macfadyen, a contributor to the project, pinged Apple to make sure that users of the mobile development platform wouldn't find their apps rejected simply for using the tool. As you remember, the agreement states: "Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine" (and of course HTML and CSS are cool), so PhoneGap -- which indeed sticks to HTML, CSS and Javascript -- is totally safe. Now developers can get back to having their apps rejected for any number of other silly reasons.

Intel unveils Atom-based Queensbay system-on-chip, in-car infotainment, China Mobile partnership

Can't get enough of Intel's Atom? Try the new Tunnel Creek system-on-chip flavor that the company has announced. It's part of the Queensbay platform, something of a Menlow successor that's better suited for MIDs and the like thanks to its greater RAM capacity (still only 1GB), PCIe bus (opening the door to Ion), and integrated gigabit LAN. All that with a consumption of just 5TDP leaves our friend Chippy from UMPC Portal to say the platform could be "the natural choice for simple, low-cost MIDs." As Intel ramps up for its Developer Forum the company is also touting its partnership with the Chinese auto manufacturer HawTai to produce a MeeGo-based infotainment system that, wait for it, also runs on Atom. And, finally, China Mobile is looking to rely on Intel chips for "targeted platforms powering its wireless networks" and to "provide our broadband wireless network the benefits of world class energy efficiency." Next up: Atom-based pacemakers, espresso machines, and puppy dogs.

Apple issues software update for new 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros

Apple would seem to have been optimizing its code in the time between sending its latest MacBook Pro models into mass production and yesterday's launch, as we've just come across a software update for the brand new 2010 laptop models. Specifically aimed at the 15- and 17-inch machines -- which differ from the 13-incher with their Core 2010 CPUs and automatically switching graphics subsystem -- the patch is aimed at improving "graphics stability for high-performance video and gaming applications" while also squashing a variety of bugs. That hardly sounds like you'd be in danger if you didn't update, but we'd still advise swallowing the 258MB pill just to keep your aluminum-clad investment safe.

Sharkoon unveils SATA and IDE HDD combo docking station

We have seen lots of docks where you can plug in a SATA drive turning it into an external HDD via USB or eSATA connectivity. Sharkoon has offered up a new docking station today called the QuickPort Combo eSATA docking station.

The docking station can support SATA drives by plugging them into the dock like a cartridge. Below the SATA HDD slot are ports for connecting IDE HDDs to the docking station as well. The dock connects to the PC via eSATA or USB 2.0 connectivity.

The dock has slots that work for both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs. Other features include LEDs to show drive access, required cables and more. The dock measures 71 x 133 x 95mm and weighs 545 grams. The dock is available now for 36.90 EUR.

If you were near an internet display terminal yesterday, you might've tragically stumbled upon one of Microsoft's Kin promo videos. Sure, the product might be slightly condescending to its supposed target market, but the promotional videos are outright MTV-gone-bad, full of hipster shorthand and fake "reality" bits. The "Day in the Life" videos are particularly egregious, featuring a guy on a road trip to burn a box of mementos from his ex while accompanied by his two new girlfriends, a terrifying parade comprised of facial hair and Williamsburg-esque terror, and a tragically-near-30 couch surfer trying to remember a drunken night of excess through pictures. Strikes a bit close to home, we must say. So, in case you missed the spots you can check a couple out after the break, but to wash the palate we've also provided our very own "Kin-less" spin on the concept, with the help of a Windows Mobile 6.5 handset we just happened to have lying around.

Still harboring some lingering doubts that the Desk Phone Dock is as real as you hoped it to be? Then it looks like you can now cast those worries aside, as our pals at Engadget Chinese have spotted the device in the wild following its debut at the China Sourcing Fair. Unfortunately, there's still no word on a release date, but the dock will reportedly run $150 "or more," and it does seem to work just as promised, with the speaker at least loud to be heard on a crowded trade show floor. Motorola software update makes 3D automatic, except for the "buying a new TV" part

It's not like a couple of button presses on a remote was the big gap between us and the perfect 3D experience but when most people can't even figure out if they're actually watching HDTV, some automated assistance can't hurt. To that end Motorola has developed an update for its latest set-top boxes that allow them to automatically detect and process 3D signals so those properly equipped can watch without having to lift a finger, and even adjusts the on screen graphics to match. No word when operators will actually deploy the new software, though odds are it will be well before you actually buy a 3DTV so we wouldn't worry too much, yet.

Microsoft Project Pink webcast sneaks in early Turtle sighting

Microsoft’s Project Pink event is scheduled to take place in around twelve hours time, and SlashGear will be there to bring you all the details. �However, if you’d like a sneak peek at one of the devices themselves, head over to Microsoft’s livestream page; the event may not be running, but either accidentally or on purpose there’s a Project Pink “Turtle” in view. �Already well leaked over the past few months, the Turtle is expected to be – along with its “Pure” counterpart – a QWERTY slider prioritizing mobile social networking.

Manufactured by Sharp, the handsets are in effect Microsoft’s new Sidekick alternative, created using the team acquired when they bought Danger. �Unlike Windows Phone 7 it seems there’s a more featurephone-slant than smartphone functionality, but we’ll have to wait and see exactly how Microsoft position them at the event later today in order to be sure.

The underlying OS is Windows CE but heavily skinned, and there’s a Zune HD style app store and other connected services. �Both devices – under different titles from their current codenames – are expected to arrive on Verizon later this quarter, in advance of a GSM launch at some point along the line.

Microsoft Kin One and Kin Two announced: Windows Phone roots with a social slant (updated with video)

It's finally official: Microsoft Pink -- the product of Redmond's acquisition of Danger -- has just been unveiled as a pair of handsets sourced from Sharp (which made most of Danger's Sidekicks) known as the Kin One and Kin Two. The devices are being marketed as Windows Phones, and while they're ultimately based on most of the same underpinnings of Windows Phone 7, it's a distinctly and totally different experience -- the entire user interface is custom to Kin with a heavy social media slant, a custom browser (we're told it's based on the Zune's browser), and surprisingly, zero support for third-party apps. The displays are capacitive with support for multitouch (yes, you can pinch and zoom in the browser), but there's no support for in-browser Flash or Silverlight.

Kin One -- the phone we'd seen rumored as "Turtle" -- is basically a curved square slider with a QVGA display, 4GB of internal storage, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Kin Two, meanwhile, is the phone leaked as the "Pure," upping the ante with a HVGA display and a more traditional landscape QWERTY slide form factor. It also moves up to an 8 megapixel cam and 8GB of internal storage, but otherwise, the experience is roughly the same as what you get on the One; both phones have WiFi and Bluetooth in addition to their 3G cellular radios. For what it's worth, Microsoft is emphasizing that internal storage really isn't a big deal with the Kin phones, because your entire photo and video collection that you capture using the onboard camera is synced seamlessly with your bottomless online storage; you can access the entire collection from your phone at any time by browsing thumbnails, and if you want the full content, you can download it. Kin comes bundled with a desktop web experience that's entirely based on Silverlight for viewing and sorting just about all of the major stuff that you can see on your phone -- contacts, social network status updates, images, and so on -- and we've got to admit, it looks pretty slick. NASDAQ and CEA announce Smartphone Index

The NASDAQ isn't exactly our usual beat here at Engadget, but it's not every day that a consumer electronics market segment gets elevated to the status of having its own index, which is what the stock exchange has now done with a little help from the Consumer Electronics Association. They've teamed up for the NASDAQ OMX CEA Smartphone Index, which consists of 84 companies that are involved in one way or another with the "building, design and distribution of handsets, hardware, software, and mobile networks associated with the development, sale and usage of smartphones." We're having a bit of trouble tracking down the complete list of companies included in the index, but it does apparently have the usual suspects like Apple, Google and RIM, and it has started out with a valuation 250.00.

Netflix Delays New Releases from Fox and Universal 28 Days, but It's Not All Bad [Streaming Video]

Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro Could Show Up Next Week

Hey, do you want a new MacBook? How about a new MacBook Pro? Have you been waiting just as long as everyone else for a refresh to the current lineup? Well, if that description fits you pretty well, then do we have some good news for you. Some model numbers showed up today, thanks to the Microcenter purchasing center, and if history repeats itself, then it looks like next week could be another big week for Apple.

“Apple System Good-USA,” “Mac System #1 Best-USA,” “Mac System #2 Best-USA,” and “Mac System Better-USA” all show up plain as day in the system, and they range in price from $1,799.99 to $2,299.99, which is perfectly placed to fit nicely with the current generation of MacBooks and Pros out there. According to the person who stumbled upon the find, this same situation came up last November, exactly a week before the official launch.

As we mentioned above, this happened before, so we’re leaning more towards the fact that this may, in fact, lead us to some new hardware very soon. So, what’s the big deal? Well, we can expect some Core i7 goodness, that’s for sure. At least, we’ve got our fingers crossed that that’s going to happen. Let’s hope that we get some official word from Apple sooner than later, as we can imagine that there’s plenty of people waiting (im)patiently to upgrade.

Firefox 3.6 Crashes 30% Less than 3.5 [Web Browsers]

If you've noticed your Firefox installation seems a bit more stable since you upgraded to Firefox 3.6, you're not alone. According to statistics collected by Mozilla, Firefox 3.6 is 30 percent more stable than its predecessor, and Firefox crashes are down 40 percent across the board. Firefox-focused blog Mozilla Links reports that, overall, crashes dropped "from about 6.5 crashes for every 100 users, to around 2.5." Even better: those numbers should drop even more significantly once Firefox Lorentz's isolated plug-in architecture leaves beta and becomes the standard for the majority of Firefox users. Microsoft Research combines touch and pen input for computing sweetness

When it comes to interacting with computers and other gadgets, today both pen input and touch input are very common. For the most part the two methods operate independently with most touch screens not capable of working with a pen or stylus and vice versa.

A new video from Microsoft Research shows a project that Microsoft is working on that combines pen and touch input to extend interaction with a computer beyond what either method can offer alone. The video is very cool and the input method looks like it would work very well for many uses.

For instance, you can open a new message with one hand and write on it with the pen in the other. The process makes so much sense once you see it in action that I am surprised we don�t have this already. Check out the video below with the good stuff starting at the one-minute mark.

Netflix inks with Universal and Twentieth Century Fox: first TV streams, more films, and 28 day rental delay

Everyone's streaming media darling, Netflix, has just reached terms with both Universal and Twentieth Century Fox. Both agreements beef up Netflix's streaming content while limiting Netflix to renting DVD and Blu-ray discs 28 days after the retail street date -- yup, just like with Warner Brothers. To put that into perspective, while Twentieth Century Fox's "Avatar" DVD/Blu-ray will hit shelves on April 22nd it won't be available for Netflix rental until the end of May. On the plus side we've got a first time, Netflix TV streaming agreement with TCF -- albeit, released in a window it decides. Content includes the complete prior seasons of shows like "24," "Bones," and "Lie to Me" in addition to older library titles like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Can't say we didn't see this one coming.

You thought $500 to start for a silly tablet was bad? How about another $410 to get the thing in some other color than raw aluminum? Yes indeed, ColorWare is at it again, this time dunking the back of iPads into giant vats of Technicolor dreams -- or nightmares, depending on what combination of hues you choose. You can make your own design, with separate colors for the back, logo, and home button, but there's no escaping that $410 service charge -- or you can pay $910 for a new, painted 16GB model. The 64GB model is a whopping $1110, but the inspirational promo video after the break is entirely free.

Editorial: HTC and Palm should get hitched and make beautiful babies

It's no secret that Palm's Hail Mary of 2009 -- webOS and the launch of the Pre -- hasn't been the rousing success that the company so desperately needed. Profitability is a distant dream, Verizon isn't giving the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus the marketing support they need to rise to the top, some analysts suggest that the cash in the bank is only enough to last for another year or so, and the choice of Sprint as a long-term exclusive launch partner continues to be a pesky monkey on the back. All of these realities have led Palm to become a near-constant source of takeover speculation in recent months. Name a company -- any company -- and odds are they've been caught up in a rumor at one point or another: Nokia, Dell, RIM, Microsoft, Google, Nintendo (yes, Nintendo), the list goes on. Of course, not all of these deals would make much strategic sense, and only one -- if any -- will ultimately happen.

For its part, Palm boss Jon Rubinstein is as adamant as ever that the company intends to remain independent and swing to profitability, and as best as we can tell, he's still got financier Elevation Partners' support in that quest. But let's suspend reality for a moment and assume an acquisition does happen; who'd be the best fit? We like HTC -- we like HTC a lot, in fact. Let's take a look at why.

Bypass PS3 firmware 3.21 in seconds -- at your own risk

Face it: Sony's backed you into a corner. You can't play PS3 online without downloading the 3.21 firmware update, but if you download, your precious 'Other OS' is forfeit -- and there may be side effects. You could wait it out, hoping Geohot comes through with a workaround. You could even sue Sony for a refund if you live in Europe. Or, if you're not terribly worried about the security of your PSN account and personal information, you could instead input just ten digits into your PS3 and magically bypass the entire issue. Though technically minded individuals have been skirting Sony's firmware checks for years now using private proxies, homebrew developer Aaron Lindsay decided to set up a public server at 67.202.81.137, which allows anyone to piggyback on his success in mere seconds -- we tried it ourselves, and it worked like a charm. By doing so, you run the risk of giving Aaron all your credentials... but if the odd identity theft doesn't break your stride, you can jump right back into that Uncharted 2 session by entering the above number into Internet Connection Settings > DNS Setting > Primary DNS.
